Halls Mill Road Water Rescue

Apr 7th, 2025

Update: 8:55 a.m. — Between 4 p.m. and midnight Sunday, April 6, 2025, Mobile Fire-Rescue Department responded to 115 calls for service. Of those calls, 46 calls (40 percent), were dispatched for a water rescue or other flood-related problem.

The bulk of those water-related calls appeared to be stranded motorists who drove into floodwaters and required no emergency care.

There were also several electronic fire alarm calls with no fire, which occur when there is a lot of lightning.

Motorists are urged to never drive into floodwaters, and to be weather aware, listening to warnings and following instructions from authorities. Turn around, don’t drown.

Firefighters rescue flood victim

Mobile Fire-Rescue Department firefighters and technical rescue personnel were dispatched at about 10:16 p.m. for a report of a water rescue in the 5100 block of Halls Mill Road in Mobile, Alabama, Sunday night, April 6, 2025, after dispatchers received a call from someone stuck in a partially submerged vehicle.

Units arrived on scene and launched a team of rescue technicians in an inflatable boat to reach the victim. The boat set out with gear and swift water swimmers into the darkened floodwaters. A second boat with backup gear and more rescuers was prepared and launched.

Once the first team located the partially submerged vehicle, a rescuer swam to a woman who was trapped by the floodwaters. After donning a personal flotation device, she was transferred to the boat safely.

At 11 p.m., the rescue boat returned to the edge of floodwaters on Halls Mill Road, where firefighters  helped her to safety and walked her out of the boat. She was treated on scene and transported by MFRD paramedics to a local hospital for evaluation.

As strong thunderstorms drenched the area with rain, MFRD continuously made calls throughout the day. Several responses were to people who had driven into water, flooding their vehicles, stalling them and blocking roadways.

Motorists are urged to never drive into floodwaters, and to be weather aware, listening to warnings and following instructions from authorities.
