May 28, 2012 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2012-43) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org HOUSE FIRE ON MOOT AVENUE Firefighters responded to a reported house fire, located in 2700 block of Moot Avenue, Monday afternoon, May 28. The call was received from neighbors at approximately 4:29 p.m. reporting smoke and fire inside the single story, wood frame structure. Firefighters arrived reporting light smoke coming from the structure. Once inside they discovered a fire in a bedroom that had burned itself out due to lack of oxygen. Firefighters extinguished remaining hot spots. No one was home at the time of the fire. The fire appears to have started on the mattress and was caused by an iron that was plugged in and set to high. At some point the iron fell off the burning mattress, coming unplugged but still hot enough to burn an impression on the floor. The fire was confined to the bedroom with light smoke throughout the structure. Damage is estimated at $5 thousand. No injuries were reported. Engines 9, 16, 23; truck 24; rescue 24 and District Chief Marquis James responded to the incident. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is conducting the investigation. ###
