Lightning Fires During Thunderstorm

Esplanade Avenue

Mobile Fire-Rescue Department firefighters were dispatched at about 4:48 p.m. for a report of a residential fire in the 100 block of Esplanade Avenue in Mobile, Alabama, Sunday, April 6, 2025.

Crews arrived on scene to find light smoke visible from a single story home with residents outside. Firefighters entered and quickly extinguished a fire behind a refrigerator. During primary and secondary searches, firefighters rescued 2 cats and 2 dogs from the residence.

They checked to make sure the fire hadn’t extended and ventilated the smoke from the home. The fire was caused by lightning.

Richmond Drive

Mobile Fire-Rescue Department firefighters were dispatched at about 5:35 p.m. for a report of a residential fire from a lightning strike in the 3000 block of Richmond Drive in Mobile, Alabama, Sunday, April 6, 2025.

Units arrived on scene to find light smoke showing from the roof of a single-story home with residents evacuated. They entered the attic and found a fire, which they extinguished. They used a fan to ventilate smoke from the home.

An underground natural gas line in the area was ruptured at the time of this incident and natural gas was bubbling up from the mud near a sidewalk and into the air. Spire was called to control the gas leak. There was no ignition of the natural gas before it was shut off.

The fire in the attic was caused by lightning. There were no reports of any injuries.

Glen Acres Drive East

Mobile Fire-Rescue Department units were dispatched at about 5:39 p.m. for a report of a residential fire in the 1200 block of Glen Acres Drive East in Mobile, Alabama, Sunday, April 6, 2025.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the roof of a single-story brick residence. They found a fire in a laundry room with some extension into the area around it. They extinguished the fire and searched for anyone inside with no one found. The fire was caused by a lightning strike.

Hamilton Blvd

Mobile Fire-Rescue Department units were dispatched at 7:45 p.m. for a report of a commercial building fire at a warehouse in the 5200 block of Hamilton Boulevard in Mobile, Alabama, Sunday night, April 6, 2025.

They arrived on scene to find a fire in an electrical panel that had been extinguished by employees with a fire extinguisher.

Crews checked for any extension and used fans to ventilate light smoke from the facility. The fire was caused by a lightning strike.
