MAY FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH
The May Firefighter of the Month was nominated by a grateful citizen who was appreciative for the kindness shown to her and her grandchildren during a recent visit to a Mobile Fire-Rescue Station. Firefighter Paul "Steve" Martell went out of his way to give them a positive experience while visiting the fire station. According to the letter written, the citizen took her grandchildren by the Springhill Fire Station #18 and were greeted by the firefighters assigned to the station, they showed the children ages 3 and 7 the fire truck, the lights etc. According to the letter Firefighter Martell however made an outstanding effort to explain all the equipment and let the children have hands on experience with the equipment. The family member was very appreciative for Martell taking the time to go the extra mile and educate her grandchildren. He gave such attention to the children, even the 3 year old. He made a great impression on the family and they felt he should be recognized for his efforts. The Pleasant Valley Optimist Club, who sponsors the award, on Wednesday at a breakfast at the Tiny Diny Restaurant, honored Martell.
Martell will also be presented the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department's "Firefighter Creed Award", which is presented to an individual whose actions exemplify the Firefighters' Creed, that is, selfless acts not associated with his respective duties and performed solely for the purpose of rendering aid to an individual or the community.
Martell has been with the department for over 3 1/2 years.
