MOBILE FIRE EXPLORER ACCEPTED INTO FIREFIGHTER PROGRAM
Mobile Fire-Rescue Explorer Jesse Phelps, a senior at Faith Academy, was recently accepted into the Auburn Student Firefighter Program through the City of Auburn, Alabama.
Jesse joined Fire Explorers two and half years ago, and after completing his probationary period was assigned to Engine 22 first shift, located on Airport Blvd near Regency.
While assigned to Engine 22 Phelps became part of the crew responding to Emergency calls and serving the citizens of the City of Mobile.
The Student Firefighter program allows those enrolled to attend college and work for the City of Auburn Fire Department. Firefighters must maintain 2.5 GPA and receive 100 % tuition reimbursement.
The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Explorer Program is open to young men and women age 14, who have completed the eight grade, to age 21. Explorers participate in monthly meetings and training sessions that teach them about the Fire Service and Emergency Medical Services.
After completing a probationary period and mandatory training, Explorers who are age 16 or older may participate in the Ride-a-long program, where they are assigned an Engine, crew and shift. The Ride-a-long program allows them to respond to actual emergencies where they can observe the Fire Service first hand.
Those who meet the age and grade requirements and are interested in joining the Mobile Fire-Rescue Explorer program should email Captain Todd Norsworthy at norsworthyc@cityofmobile.org or contact us on our Facebook page “Mobile Fire-Rescue Explorers”.
