MOBILE FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO CHEMICAL LEAK
Members of the Mobile Fire-Rescue Departments Hazardous Material Response Team were called to a Chlorine leak at DPC Enterprises at 1200 Jarvis Road at Telegraph Road early Thursday morning, June 7, 2001. The call was received from employees at Occidental Chemical Corporation, which is adjacent to DPC, at approximately 2:53 a.m. after they detected a leak. Firefighters and Haz Mat Technicians from Mobile Fire-Rescue Department discovered a 1 ton Chlorine cylinder leaking product. Haz Mat Techs made entry onto the property to secure the leak. They returned a short time later to check the cylinder to ensure the leak was secure. Haz Mat Techs were not able to stop the leak completely but were able to slow the leak down. Company Officials arrived on the scene later and along with Mobile Haz Mat Techs was able to create a vacuum on the cylinder securing the leak so the remaining product could be off loaded into another cylinder on the property. It was not known how much product was in the cylinder or how much was released. The cylinder was weighed after the leak was secured and it was estimated at 1 thousand pounds remaining in the cylinder. No evacuations were necessary, as the danger was minimal. Fire Officials with the assistance of Mobile Police did close traffic on Telegraph Road for approximately an hour and half as a precaution. No injuries were reported and the scene was turned over to DPC Enterprises Officials at approximately 8:45 a.m..
