Pets Rescued from Trailer Fire

Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org PETS RESCUED FROM TRAILER FIRE Firefighters were dispatched to a reported mobile home fire this morning, Tuesday, March 12 at approximately 8:58 a.m. The mobile home was located in a trailer park in the 900 block of Dawes Road. When firefighters arrived they reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the mobile home. The occupant had escaped unharmed but told firefighters she had pets, including snakes, inside the mobile home. Firefighters encountered heavy fire inside but managed to rescue two dogs, a Poodle and Chihuahua as well as one King snake and two Albino Pythons. A fourth snake did not make it out. Firemedics gave the dogs oxygen and the owner took them to a vet to be checked out. Investigators, based on evidence and information provided by the occupant, determined the fire originated in the kitchen. The occupant advised she had placed a pan of grease on the stove top to heat up in preparation of cooking. She went about doing something else and forgot about the grease heating on the stove, when she returned she discovered the fire in the kitchen. The fire is being ruled accidental by way of unattended cooking. Damage is estimated at approximately $15 thousand dollars. No injuries were reported. Engines 22, 26, 27; truck 5; rescue 22 and District Chief Kenny Tillman responded. The Bureau of Fire Prevention conducted the investigation. ###
