Jul 12th, 2001

July 12, 2001 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2001-45) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-5806/Fax: (251) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org MOBILE FIRE INVESTIGATORS CONDUCT PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION ON YMCA Investigators with Mobile Fire-Rescue Department's Bureau of Fire Prevention have conducted a preliminary investigation into the cause of the fire that heavily damaged the old YMCA building located at 168 Government Street, Saturday, July 7, 2001. Mobile Fire Investigators completed a walk through in the building, Thursday afternoon, July 12, 2001 and it appears there may have been at least two points of origin and possibly more in the large 3-story building. Although this is just a preliminary investigation this would indicate that human factor contributed to the cause of the fire. Right now Investigators are ruling the fire as suspicious until further evidence can be obtained. No other evidence was found and the investigation will continue to rule out any possible connection of the points of origin. Fire Investigators are still unable to get to all parts of the building because of fire debris and missing sections of floors etc. ###
