November 26, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2003-36) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-5806/Fax: (251) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org TWO INJURED IN HOUSE FIRE Neighbors called 911 Tuesday evening, November 25, 2003 at approximately 9:53 p.m. to report flames visible from a house next door located at 955 Kentucky Street. When firefighters arrived at approximately 9:55 p.m. they discovered two males in the front yard of the structure with injuries consistent with those received in a fire. Mobile Fire-Rescue Firemedics treated the pair and transported them to a local hospital for further treatment. Due to HIPAA Regulations names and particulars about injuries cannot be revealed. The fire appears to have originated in the living room near or on a chair. Fire Investigators discovered smoking materials in the area. Investigators were able to interview one of the occupants with minor injuries. He told Investigators that he was asleep in the middle bedroom and woke up to smell of smoke. He attempted to get out through the front door but couldn't. He grabbed his roommate and took him out the back door. He further told Investigators that earlier in the evening around 6:30 p.m. he was awaken by his roommate to give him his medicine and found him in his chair in the livingroom where he always sat and smoked each evening. This was consistent with what the Investigators discovered. The cause of the fire was smoking materials. The fire spread throughout the structure causing an estimated $40 thousand in damage. ###
