Day Lake at Tricentennial Park became a lively outdoor classroom on Saturday, November 22, as the Mobile Parks and Recreation Department (MPRD) hosted the popular youth fishing clinic, "Wish is to Catch A Fish!". Formerly named "Reeling in the Fun", the free, hands-on event welcomed children ages 4 -17 to learn the basics of fishing while connecting with nature and the local community.
Participants received free cane fishing rods (while supplies lasted) and learned essential skills such as tying knots, baiting hooks, and casting lines from volunteer experts with the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. In addition, the event included a "Clean Day Lake" activity, led by Mobile Baykeeper and the Mobile County Wildlife & Conservation Association, allowing children and families to help preserve the park’s natural beauty and practice environmental stewardship.
“This event is about creating connections between kids and nature, families and the community, and generations of anglers who love the outdoors,” said Kim Carmondy, Senior Director of Mobile Parks and Recreation.“We’re proud to partner with local organizations that share our passion for conservation and education.”
The event drew dozens of children and families, who participated in both the fishing and conservation activities. Many participants left with new fishing skills, a deeper appreciation for the outdoors, and lasting memories of community connection.
