Non-Merit Position Application for Common Laborer not Engaged in Regular Employment

This is temporary, unskilled and semi-skilled labor for the City of Mobile Public Works divisions.  Requires the completion of a minimum of the 8th grade, and departments may require a valid driver's license.  Laborers perform a wide variety of tasks that requires physical strength and stamina and must be able to lift items weighing over 40 pounds.

It is helpful for Laborers to have some knowledge of the proper use of hand and power tools, the ability to understand and follow instructions, the ability to perform heavy manual work under varying weather conditions, and the ability to meet attendance guidelines and work well with others.

After working 6 months, Laborers may apply for a Public Service Worker I (PSW I) position, which is a merit system job.  Training in a PSW I job may lead to advancement when learning the operation of a variety of equipment or performing more skilled work.

Some examples of work to be performed includes: Patches holes in roads with asphalt; flags automobiles around construction areas; maintaining equipment; digs ditches and cleaning culverts; cutting brush and foliage back from roadways; picking up trash on roads; assisting in hauling and laying pipe; works with shovel scattering dirt and shells; groundskeeping to include cutting lawns and shrubbery with power and hand tools; cleans catch basins and storm drains; cleans restrooms at parks; set up barricades; operates equipment to include trucks, mowers, concrete mixer, small transmovers and tractors; loads and unloads equipment and materials; does routine maintenance work; cleans animal shelter building and cages; plants trees and shrubs.
