Feb 25th, 2019

Azalea Road Residential Fire

Mobile, AL – At approximately 06:37 hours, Mobile Fire-Rescue Department companies were dispatched to the 1300 block of Azalea Road for reports of smoke visible from a residential home. Upon arrival on scene, crews confirmed heavy smoke billowing from a 2-story, wood-frame, residential structure. A 2nd-alarm response was requested to the scene at approximately 06:54 hours.

Two patients/victims (mother and daughter) were rescued from the incident and transported to local hospitals for definitive care:

  • A 56-year old, female patient was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to University Hospital with a confirmed traumatic injury, following an escape from the 2nd-story of the home.
  • An 84-year old, female patient was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to Springhill Medical Center for definitive care.

The homeowner informed that her pet cat, Darby, awakened her and alerted her to the fire situation. Thus, prompting her to escape the home from a 2nd-story window. Darby (male), subsequently, passed away, as a result of the incident.

The fire was successfully extinguished without any injuries to fire personnel. Fire Investigators discovered that the area of origin was in the kitchen, but the cause of the blaze remains undetermined.
