Fire Set in Greer’s Store, Arrest Made

Feb 28th, 2024

At about 7:13 a.m. Wednesday, February 28, 2024, Mobile Fire-Rescue Department dispatch received an electronic alarm notification and calls reporting a fire at Greer’s grocery store at 851 Government Street in Mobile, Alabama, and dispatched units to that location for a commercial building fire.

Within minutes, personnel arrived on scene to find smoke inside the store and fire in a paper products aisle. The store’s sprinkler system had activated and knocked down most of the flames. Personnel extinguished the remaining fire. Crews began salvage efforts to remove water from the store to protect the property from further damage.

The fire appears to have been intentionally set. Timothy David Jones, 39, was arrested near the scene and charged with Arson First Degree. Jones also had an active arson warrant out of Escambia County Florida.

Fire damage was limited to two aisles, but damage from water and smoke were more extensive. No one was injured. The fire remains under investigation.
