Start/End Time: 6:00 PM, 8:00 PM What is the purpose of art in today’s society? Is it to contribute a reprise of beauty in an often ugly world? Or should art reflect things that are true, even if they are difficult to look at? There is no one answer to these questions, but every artist strives to answer them nonetheless. Local artists and academics Wanda Sullivan, Lavada Raouf, Phillip Counselman, April Livingston, and De’Anthony Delaney will discuss possible answers from their experience on why and to what end artists portray uncomfortable subjects. This talk, inspired by the CHRISTENBERRY: In Alabama exhibition—which includes two of Christenberry’s controversial works of the KKK—explores why and how artists portray subjects and themes not always fit for the dinner table.
