McGregor Avenue Project
About the South McGregor Avenue Project
Starting on May 1, 2023, the City of Mobile will be working with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) on a major construction on S. McGregor Ave. between Dauphin St. and Airport Blvd. Traffic will be limited to residents, emergency vehicles and service vehicles during this time. All other traffic will use one of the alternate routes identified below.
The S. McGregor Project has been in the works for more than 15 years.
The construction cost of the project is $16.5 million, with total costs of around $23 million.
Community Meetings
As key components of the project move forward, we will communicate directly with citizens in the area and the public at large. The City of Mobile and City Council members have already met with multiple groups and local HOA Leadership to discuss the project. Our staff members have also canvassed the area in person to inform residents about the project.
During Construction
The City of Mobile will work to minimize cut-through traffic through the main neighborhoods affected by this project: Llanfair, Yester Oaks, and Country Club Estates. The City will be announcing and promoting suggested alternative routes for residents. Airport Boulevard, Spring Hill Avenue, Old Shell Road, Bit & Spur Road, University Boulevard, Interstate 65 and the I-65 Service Roads will remain open throughout the project.
As work continues on the South McGregor Avenue project, we would like to remind those in the area that roads closed to through traffic are also closed to bicycles and pedestrians. If you do not live in the immediate area, we ask that you please find alternate routes for walking and biking activities. If you live along McGregor Ave., we ask that you please be careful when workers and heavy machinery are present.
Our goal is to keep everyone in our construction zones safe, and your cooperation helps.
Time and Start Date
The S. McGregor Project is scheduled to begin on May 1, 2023, and is expected to take approximately two years. Once work begins, McGregor Ave. will close between Dauphin Street to Airport Blvd. During that time, traffic on this section of McGregor Ave. will be limited to residents, emergency services and delivery vehicles. All other motorists must use alternate routes on University Blvd. and Interstate 65. Airport Blvd, Spring Hill Ave., Old Shell Road, Bit and Spur Road, University Blvd., I-65 and the I-65 service roads will not be impacted. Motorists will not be able to turn left onto McGregor Ave. from Dauphin Street, but the intersection of McGregor Ave. and Dauphin Street will remain open during much of the project. We will notify residents and the public ahead of any closures of the intersection.

During Construction
The City of Mobile will work to minimize cut-through traffic through the main neighborhoods affected by this project: Spring Hill Manor and The Village of Spring Hill. The City of Mobile has a suggested alternative route for residents via Old Shell Road, Springhill Avenue, Interstate 65 and the I-65 service roads. All local businesses in the area will remain open throughout the project.
Upcoming Closures related to S. McGregor Project
The intersection of McGregor Ave. and Dauphin Street will be temporarily closed from July 7 to July 11 of 2023 for required utility work. During this time, westbound Dauphin Street will be closed to through traffic starting at Ashley Drive, and eastbound Dauphin Street will be closed to through traffic at Wimbledon Drive. Local traffic will be able to access these areas, but there will be a hard closure preventing all motorists from using the intersection of McGregor Ave. and Dauphin Street while this utility work is being performed.
Messaging signs communicating the intersection closure have already been placed in the area to notify residents and commuters. The City of Mobile Community Affairs Department has also canvassed neighborhoods in the area to share information about the project and alternative routes with residents.
Beginning on July 7, 2023, McGregor Ave. will also be closed from Dauphin Street to Vickers Place through September 1, 2023, with a hard closure beginning just south of Dogwood Circle leading to the Dauphin Street intersection. Residents will be able to access Dogwood Circle and roads to the north, but this area will be closed to through traffic until this section of the project is completed on July 28. You can find a map of these upcoming closures below:
