After working in leadership positions for the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Prichard, Shayla Beaco was recently tapped by Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson to be the city's senior director of community affairs. Beaco assumed her duties in November of 2013, with her primary focus on public outreach and citizen engagement.

Beaco graduated from Spring Hill College in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in political science and from Auburn University with a master of community planning in 1999.

After Auburn, Beaco was hired on with the City of Mobile's urban development department where she worked primarily in the long range planning division. Her areas of responsibility included coordination of the city's smart growth initiative and land use planning efforts. From there she was hired on by the city of Prichard as the director of community and economic development. In Prichard, Beaco was responsible for the development of the city's first comprehensive plan. In addition, she served as the site coordinator for the city's Weed and Seed program and director of the planning and zoning department.

In her role with the Chamber, Beaco coordinated Envision Coastal Alabama, a two-county partnership focused on long range strategic planning efforts for the coastal Alabama region. In addition she served as the Chamber's liaison to the city of Mobile, worked with Chamber members to address local government issues.

Beaco is a member of many local volunteer groups, including the Spring Hill College Alumni Board, Junior League of Mobile, Keep Mobile Beautiful, and the Mobile Area Education Foundation. She is also a 2010 graduate of Leadership Mobile and was recognized in 2011 as one of Mobile Bay magazine's "40 Under Forty" honorees. She is married with two young children.
