Fred Richardson Reports On Progress In District I

PROUD TO REPRESENT DISTRICT I

INITIATIVES FOR DISTRICT I

  • Aaron Park Renovations; phases I, II, & III
  • Trinity Gardens
  • New Toulminville Library
  • Affordable Homes
  • F. D. Richardson Height

It has been an honor and privilege to serve the people of District I and to represent them on our City council for the last eight years. With the help of many dedicated people, we have made very positive moves towards improving the quality of life for the people of our district. Spearheaded by residents and with the help of Keep Mobile Beautiful, we have mobilized neighborhood cleanup campaigns, With help from the Crime Prevention Unit of the M.P.D. and the enforcement division of our Urban Development Department, we have stopped drug dealing operations, tore down unsafe housing and closed businesses that were considered public nuisances or not operating in the best interest of our community. We are attacking overgrown lots and having the owners maintain them or we bring them to Environmental court. Our district was the first district to bring Environmental Court to the people by holding court in the Crystal Towers lobby.

The turn out for the cleanup campaigns in Beat 30 and 31, was OUTSTANDING. I have walked, talked and drove through every neighborhood in District One and can see the pride that has developed since we have initiated our war on crime, blight and other illicit or illegal activities. We are going to go through District I ~ BEAT BY BEAT, STREET BY STREET AND HOUSE BY HOUSE until we drive illegal activity out and cleanup the blight that infects our neighborhoods and the entire city. District I is a model for all districts to follow. We have shown that with community cooperation and working together there isn’t anything we can’t accomplish.

Some items/projects that I have worked on in District I to improve the quality of life of our residents are:

  • Removal of substandard housing and increased police and litter patrols to catch and prosecute those individuals that violate our city ordinances and laws.
  • Where possible and as long as funds were available, constructed SPEED BUMPS on those thoroughfares where speeders endangered the lives and welfare of residents.
  • Initiated drainage projects that affect our community from an environmental and flooding standpoint.
  • Condemnation & removal of substandard housing as well as the cleaning and removal of the terrible blight that has affected our neighborhoods in the past.
  • We continue to work closely with the Crime Prevention Unit of the M.P.D. to help in our district’s fight against crime in the neighborhood.

We will actively develop new neighborhood groups and strengthen those already in existence. Since community groups/associations are the backbone of any community, I will continue to call on the good citizens of District I to help me continue the dream of cleaning up our neighborhoods, helping property values increase thus improving the quality of life for all our people. We are faced with new and old challenges that will determine the direction our city takes in this new millennium. One of the main reasons for this newsletter, is to continue the GRASS ROOTS effort and to get input from the people in District I. With your input and help, we can develop a strategic plan that will determine the growth and direction of our great City.

Many millions of dollars have been spent in our district already and I am planning to spend more to help our district grow and develop.
