City of Mobile to Tow Junk Vehicles

May 22, 2018

Mobile, Ala. -- The City of Mobile will begin towing inoperable, abandoned junk vehicles that have been in the same location for at least 30 days. The owners of the property and vehicle will be sent a notice of violation and will be given 30 days to relocate the vehicle.

If the issue is not corrected in that time frame, the vehicle will be towed from private property to the impound lot. All costs will be assessed against the vehicle as a lien. After 60 days at the impound lot, the vehicle will be sold at public auction.

"By removing these junk vehicles, we will increase property values, beautify yards and help revitalize our neighborhoods," said Mayor Stimpson. "Citizens came to my Administration with concerns about these vehicles, and now we finally have a solution to remedy the issue."

Mayor Stimpson sponsored legislation to eradicate these public nuisances, and the City Council unanimously approved the amended ordinance during Tuesday's regular meeting.

In 2017, there were more than 800 complaints to 311 for junk vehicles. As of May 2018, 311 has received 375 complaints from citizens for inoperable motor vehicles.
