A Message from Mayor Stimpson - August 10

Good evening,

It is 8 p.m. on Monday, August 10, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Every night we update you on the latest COVID-19 numbers for Mobile County. During the weekend, there were some aberrations in the data which were misleading, so we aren't attaching last week's summary to this report. After drilling down with a closer look during our regular Unified Command briefing this morning, the Mobile County Health Department stated they were confident and encouraged that our case numbers are trending downward.

Data from one of Mobile's labs that represents 40% of the testing in the County also supports that trend. The graph below is their number of positive cases (red bars) with the blue line showing the seven-day average of positive tests. This downward trend is exactly what we were hoping for when the masking ordinance was enacted.

It is evident we are able to combat this virus by following the simple steps of wearing a face covering, keeping our hands clean and staying home when you are sick.

In viewing the data on our hospital's ICU bed availability, it appears that there is not much change from last week. The hospitals should start seeing less demand for their COVID-19 beds as the case numbers continue their downward trend.

During our staff meeting this morning, I was amazed at the amount of work that is happening in our City. From drainage, street and road projects to IT collaborations, I am looking forward to a week full of Mobile Momentum. Look for additional information coming this week.

As my staff and I looked back to the beginning of our COVID-19 response, we are encouraged by the leadership in our community. Together, we have rallied around small businesses, prayed for essential workers and those experiencing COVID-19, and we have also kept the business of our City moving. Many of our downtown streets have been resurfaced. The work on Broad Street in conjunction with our TIGER Grant continues. We were the first city in Alabama to offer financial assistance to our small businesses that were deemed "high risk."

Our team has been the bellwether in bringing people together to ensure our citizens can live their best quality of life during these uncertain times. Together, we have weathered hurricanes, oil spills and many other challenges. We are resilient. Focused and fearless, we will continue to the fight against COVID-19.
