A Message from Mayor Stimpson - August 11

Good evening,
It is 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 11 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
As of tonight, Mobile County reported a total of 10,726 COVID positive individuals, an increase of 93 individuals from yesterday. According to the Mobile County Health Department, a total of 222 patients have died due to COVID-19. For a detailed look at today's data click here.
The safety of our citizens is our number priority. Today, through unanimous consent, the City Council approved Jeremy Lami as the next Chief of the Mobile Fire Rescue Department. Lami, an 18-year veteran of MFRD, was highly recommended by his peers following the announcement of the retirement of Chief Mark Sealy. Chief Lami will assume the position in late August.
I would like to thank Chief Sealy for building the momentum within our fire rescue team. As the Chief of Staff, Lami was an integral part of the team that led us from an IOS-3 rating to an ISO-1 in less than 550 days. He is one of only 60 Executive Fire Officers in Alabama to have graduated from the National Fire Academy. The son of a firefighter, Jeremy started coming to Mobile's fire stations with his dad when he was 4 years old.
As a citizen, you can look forward to even greater service coming from MFRD. Specifically, they have their sights set on being accredited by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International. Today, there are less than 50 Fire Rescue Departments in the United States that are both accredited and that have an ISO-1 rating. As we go forward, when you see a fireman encourage them in their lofty pursuit.
In closing, I also want to thank the Mobile Police Department under the direction of Chief Lawrence Battiste. Our accredited police department has been attending community meetings,
town halls, national virtual calls and speaking engagements to discuss the delivery of accredited service to our citizens. It is one thing to receive accreditation, but it is definitely another set of strategies to sustain it. The strength of MFRD and MPD can be found in their employees and the in the leadership of the departments. Everyday, the leadership is challenging themselves to achieve even higher goals and higher levels of service.
