A Message from Mayor Stimpson - August 12

Good evening,

It is 10 p.m. on Wednesday, August 12 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

As of tonight, the Mobile County Health Department reports a total of 10,819 COVID-19 positive patients, an increase of 95 patients from yesterday's report. There are a total of 226 patients that have died as a result of COVID-19. For a detailed look at today's data click here.

The downward trend of new cases is very encouraging. Remember this is not a time to let down our guard. The prevention strategies including keeping your hands clean, maintaining social distancing, and wearing a face covering are crucial.

In Monday's newsletter, I alluded to the great work of our City staff. We are continuing to invest in our communities where our citizens live, work and play. Here are a few updates:

  • Pardon our progress as many of our parks are receiving improvements. Laun Park and Medal of Honor Park were both approved for renovations. Laun Park will begin interior renovations, and a design contract was awarded to renovate the concession area and restrooms in Medal of Honor Park.
  • The S.A.I.L Center located on D.I.P. was awarded $166,000 to receive interior renovations.
  • The green light to proceed has been given for the RESTORE grant funding to begin the environmental restoration of 12-mile creek. This is a major milestone in a crucial project which must be completed before Langan Lake can be dredged.

Yesterday, I announced the promotion of Anitra Henderson as the Executive Director of External Affairs and Communications and the appointment of Candace Cooksey as the Director of Communications. Both come with an enormous amount of wisdom and talent to continue our momentum. More announcements will follow as we continue to rebuild the department in the wake of George Talbot taking advantage of a new and challenging job opportunity.

In closing, as I think of the anxiety that I see in others as they fret over this and that, I'm comforted by the verse: He gives strength to those who are tired and more power to those who are weak. (Isa 40:29). In whom do we put our faith? A new President? An old mayor? I recently read, "an example of faith was found carved by a prisoner on the wall of a concentration camp. 'I believe in the sun, even though it doesn't shine; I believe in love, even when it is not shown; I believe in God, even when he doesn't speak.' - What hand could have carved such conviction? What eyes could have seen good in such horror? There is only one answer: Eyes that chose to see the unseen."

Good night!
