A Message from Mayor Stimpson - July 15

Jul 15th, 2020

Posted in: MayorCOVID-19

Good evening,

It is 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

As of tonight, there have been 5,398 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, an increase of 188 since Monday. Daily numbers on hospitalizations and deaths were not available from the Mobile County Health Department, due to the rapidly evolving nature of COVID-19 cases.

We will provide updated numbers as they become available to us.

The business of the City rolls on, even in a pandemic. I’m proud of the work our city employees are doing to continue serving you during this challenging time - often putting themselves at risk to take care of us.

Tonight I’d like to share an update on a very important city initiative. We have a generational opportunity to update our antiquated and unwieldy zoning code.

Thank you to everyone who submitted comments during the public review for UDC version 3. We appreciate the large amount of interest and thoughtful comments on the draft regulations. We are now in the process of reviewing and addressing the comments, and preparing the UDC for adoption.

Over the next 30 days, we will be incorporating feedback and preparing the final draft UDC (version 4). In September, we anticipate releasing UDC version 4 to the Planning Commission and the public, along with a document that responds to comments on UDC version 3. When UDC version 4 is released to Planning Commission, the formal hearing and adoption process begins. Regarding the adoption of the new zoning code, Alabama state law requires at least two public hearings – one with the Planning Commission and one with the City Council. See the graphic below for an outline of the next steps for the UDC process.

We’ll send additional updates by email when specific dates are available.

These are challenging times but we are up to the challenge.

Sincerely,

Sandy
