A Message from Mayor Stimpson - June 1

Good evening,

It is 9:30 p.m. on Monday, June 1, and I am writing to give you an update on the City of Mobile's efforts regarding COVID-19.

As of tonight, there are 2,243 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, out of 24,892 total tested. There are 118 deaths attributed to the virus. Coronavirus continues to be an active threat within our community and we cannot afford to let down our guard against this virus.

The events of the last 36 hours can only be described as historic. The senseless killing of George Floyd by police in Minnesota has outraged the nation. We mourn his death and condemn the indefensible actions that took his life.

Too many in our community have suffered for too long from an unjust system. On Sunday, protestors filled the streets of Mobile just as they did in major cities across America. They demonstrated their pain and anger with calls for reform. We join their voices demanding justice.

They spoke with passion, determination and, for the vast majority, with respect. I witnessed this first hand as I spoke with protestors on Sunday. I want to commend all of those who exercised their right to assemble and speak out, and particularly the organizers who emphasized the importance of peaceful protest.

I also want to commend the men and women of the Mobile Police Department who showed incredible professionalism in fulfilling their duty to protect and serve. While there were moments of confrontation, they did an admirable job in protecting the public and protecting the protestors, as well. It is important to note that there were no significant injuries to officers or protestors as part of the events on Sunday. For this we can be grateful.

Unfortunately, there were some who came to Mobile with the intent to cause harm. We dealt with those individuals and we will do everything in our power to prevent any future harm. We will not allow any person to break the law or cause harm to another. The Mobile Police will keep the peace, and they will do so in a just and respectful manner.

These are challenging times for our city and our nation. We are working harder than ever to keep you safe. We have made great strides in the fight against COVID-19. We have great work ahead of us as we join together as a community in the fight to achieve justice.

Our goal is for every citizen to feel safe and to live in peace. Our goal is for businesses to thrive and for every citizen to find meaningful employment. Our goal is for families to grow and for our children to inherit a brighter future.

I believe all of this can be achieved if we work together for good. I am ready to join with you to build a better Mobile.

Sincerely,

 Mayor Sandy Stimpson
