A Message from Mayor Stimpson - October 14

Oct 14th, 2020

Posted in: MayorCOVID-19

Good evening,

It is 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 14,093 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 37 cases. To review the detailed report, click here.

As of this evening, our teams on the ground have collected 72% of the estimated 381,360 cubic yards of trash and debris left by Hurricane Sally. These crews have collected roughly 5,502 truckloads of vegetation debris and cut down more than 13,972 hanging limbs since their work began last month.

In 2016, my administration launched the YES (Youth Empowered for Success) initiative to help young people in our city by offering greater access to educational resources, safe and productive recreational programs, life and job skills training as well as mentorship and employment opportunities.

Our largest asset in Mobile is our young talent, and through the YES Summer Jobs Program, the city has been able to connect more than 1,000 young adults to dozens of local businesses. This year, extended state funding is allowing us to extend even more opportunities through a Fall Jobs Program.

We are currently seeking businesses and students, particularly college students, who are interested in participating. More information about the Jobs program and the YES Initiative is available here.

This evening I would also like to recognize my friend Chresal Threadgill for being named Alabama's Superintendent of the Year by his colleagues. Since becoming Superintendent of the Mobile County Public School System in 2018, Threadgill has been an asset to our community. It's been said you can't have a great city without great public schools, and I'm confident he is moving ours in the right direction.

I'd like to recommend a book I'm reading for the second time, Harbinger II: The Return by Jonathan Cahn. My plan is to now go through the book underlining key events so I will hopefully better remember them. As we go through life there are so, so many things that we don't know, but had we known them it would have caused us to think differently and do differently. The history and prophesy within this book will not only enlighten you, but it will challenge you.

Sleep tight!
