A Message from Mayor Stimpson - October 8

Oct 8th, 2020

Posted in: MayorCOVID-19

Good evening,

It is 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 13,868 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 26 cases. To review the detailed report,  click here. As of this evening, our teams on the ground have collected 57% of the estimated 381,360 cubic yards of trash and debris left by Hurricane Sally. Once this first pass is completed, we will be making others.

This evening I would like to recognize the men and women of the Mobile Fire Rescue Department, who responded to a devastating 3-Alarm fire at Cotton Hall on Dauphin Street this morning. After an initial blaze was first reported by an off-duty firefighter just before 7 a.m., four ladder trucks, 11 engine companies, two ambulances and more than 60 sworn firefighters were on the scene within minutes.

Using state-of-the-art equipment, tactics and teamwork, our crews were able to successfully fight back the flames. Although much of the interior was damaged, the structure of Cotton Hall remains intact. I hope you will join me in commending MFRD's leadership and the firefighters who helped save this historic building.

Once every quarter, my senior leadership forgoes a staff meeting in favor of a service project, and this month we will be hosting a community clean-up event in Africatown. I hope you and others will join us on Oct. 23 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Robert L. Hope Community Center.

From there, we'll break into small groups that will pick up littered roadways in each of Africatown's five communities. Previous clean-up events along Baltimore Street and in the Campground area have seen significant community support, and we hope this one will be no different.

In closing, pray for our Gulf Coast neighbors in Louisiana as they brace for another hurricane.

Sleep tight.
