A Message from Mayor Stimpson - September 1st

Sep 1st, 2020

Good evening,

It is 8:30 p.m. on September 1st, 2020 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 12,353 COVID-19 cases an increase of 58 cases. To review the detailed report, click here.

For the week ending August 30th, Mobile County reported a cumulative total of 11,980 laboratory confirmed COVID-19 positive individuals. Area hospitals average weekly volume of COVID-19 positive patients was 129 per day. This was a decrease of 3.7% from the prior week average of 134. The weekly ICU bed availability averaged 10%.

The City of Mobile has contracted with Andy Scott of New Hand Signs to restore historic and place markers, starting with the ones downtown. The City reached out to Andy and there was mutual interest; what started as a passion project has grown into a mission of exploration. The city's inventory on historic and place markers was originally about 12 or 13, but continues to grow as more are located.

I was hoping that by inviting Ty Bullard of Joe Bullard Cadillac to the unveiling of the plaque that he would give me keys to a Cadillac. But as you can see, he only gave me a fist bump.

The installation photographed below is on Conti Street at the corner of Royal Street. It marks the original Cadillac Homesite. The sign reads "Here stood the home of Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, soldier of fortune under Louis XIV. Founder of Detroit, 1701; prominent personage in Canada until 1710. He lived here during his residence in Mobile (1713-1717) as royal Governor of Louisiana." Make sure to check it out the next time you're in the area.

In closing tonight, I want to tell you why I often talk about creating momentum. Again, the thought comes from John Maxwell.  "A leader cannot ignore the impact of momentum. Without it, simple tasks seem insurmountable. With it, things you thought to be impossible will happen. Leaders create momentum; followers catch it; managers are able to continue it once it has begun. But creating momentum requires someone who can motivate others."  So as you go to sleep tonight, think about how you can create momentum within your sphere of influence. If you don't know how, do what your children do - Google it!  Now, let's get that Mobile Momentum going.

Goodnight,
