A Message from Mayor Stimpson - September 9

Good evening,

It is 8:30 p.m. on September 9, 2020 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 12,695 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 54 cases. To review the detailed report, click here

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which aims to improve access to persons with disabilities in all areas of public accommodation.  Broken or outdated City infrastructure poses such an access barrier and prevents some from enjoying the full benefit of our City. The City's Capital Improvement Program has prioritized investment to eliminate these barriers, especially those found in broken, missing and impassable sections along the City's 681 miles of sidewalks and 5,100 sidewalk curb ramps.

Last year, the City repaired or installed almost 4 miles of sidewalks and replaced curb ramps at 61 intersections.  Since 2015 the City has repaired or replaced over 49 miles of sidewalks and replaced curb ramps at 575 intersections. This work has made the City safer, improved quality of life and increased the mobility of all Mobilians and our guests.

This repair work continues throughout the City and is being performed by both large and small City contractors, and City repair crews.  Large investments also have been made in City parks and facilities, including trails, restrooms, parking areas and walkways.  This work is for all of us but has special focus to eliminate barriers faced by those with disabilities, and to fulfill the promise made 30 years ago.

In closing, this morning in one of my daily devotionals Max Lucado wrote, "At the beginning of every act of faith, there is often a seed of fear." In 2013, we cast a bold vision to become the safest, most business and family friendly city in America. Many told us we were setting ourselves up to fail. This vision was certainly not a sure bet and we had to have the courage to aim high. Our team at the City remains committed to that goal and we have made great strides towards reaching it. Today, I have even more faith in our ability to get there.

Sleep tight!
