Mobile, Ala. — Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis has tapped an experienced group of local experts and leaders to focus on strengthening violence-prevention efforts across the City of Mobile.
Called the Safer Communities Task Force, this group will advise the city’s public safety leadership on data-informed strategies aimed at reducing serious violence and improving coordination among the agencies and organizations already working with at-risk youth and families in Mobile.
It includes representatives from local public safety, public health, and educational institutions, as well as faith-based, social service, workforce development, and community organizations. Some of these partnering organizations already work with the city in different capacities but bringing them together on a regular basis will improve communication, reduce duplication, and better align local resources.
By combining professional expertise with strong community ties, the Safer Communities Task Force will provide Mayor Cheriogotis and other city leaders with a clearer picture of where gaps exist and how existing programs and services can be better aligned to serve individuals and the community.
“This group brings together so many partners who are already doing incredible work in Mobile. We want to better coordinate those efforts so that we’re having the greatest impact,” Mayor Cheriogotis said. “As a judge, I saw many people turn their lives around with the proper supports in place. My hope is that this Task Force helps us reach people and connect them to the right resources earlier.”
The group will be led by Mobile’s Executive Director of Public Safety Curtis Graves, with guidance from the city’s Director of Prevention and Mitigation, Dr. Gerard Tate. A list of the task force members and a mission statement for the organization are available via the links below.
