Dauphin Street Corridor Improvements

The City of Mobile and the Alabama Department of Transportation will begin long-planned improvements to the Dauphin Street corridor near Interstate 65 in early 2026.

With support from federal and local dollars, this upcoming work along Dauphin Street will help improve the flow of traffic, enhance driver safety and modernize one of the city’s busiest commercial and residential corridors. The goal of the project is to reduce congestion and reduce opportunities for significant collisions between vehicles. It will also improve first responders’ access to Springhill Medical Center.

Coordinated Traffic Signals

A new fiber-connected system from Rimes Road to Sage Avenue will allow traffic signals to communicate with each other and move vehicles more efficiently.

Access Management

Median modifications will provide controlled turning movements and improve safety.

Modern Infrastructure

This project will upgrade or replace existing street lighting and traffic signals with stronger fixtures designed to withstand storms and high winds. This section of Dauphin Street will be fully resurfaced and restriped. New curbs and gutters will also be added in some sections.

Safety & Emergency Response

Controlled turning movements and improved emergency vehicle routes serving Springhill Medical Center will increase public safety for motorists and hospital patients.

The Dauphin Street Corridor Improvement Project is expected to take approximately two years. Some nighttime work and temporary lane closures are anticipated; however, traffic will be able to flow through the area during the entirety of the project.

The total cost of the project is approximately $14 million, which includes construction, design and engineering, and right of way acquisition. Project funding is provided by a combination of federal transportation dollars, City of Mobile funds, and Mobile County’s 2018 Pay-As-You-Go program.
