Mobile Parks and Recreation Department to reopen Newhouse Teen Center

Mobile, Ala. — The Mobile Parks and Recreation Department and our Breakthrough Teen Mentors are excited to reopen the city’s only community center dedicated to local teens next week.

The Newhouse Teen Center will officially reopen on Wednesday, Sept. 3, with a special “Hump Day Hangout: Paint Edition” event from 5 to 7 p.m. hosted by MPRD’s Breakthrough Teen Mentors. The reopening celebration will feature live music, food, giveaways, and a creative painting activity.

The event on Sept. 3 is free and paint supplies will be provided. Like other Breakthrough Teen events, it will be open to all area teenagers ages 13 to 18. This is a great way to meet other young Mobilians, express your creativity, and help us kick off an exciting new chapter for this one-of-a-kind space.

“We’re beyond excited to reopen the Newhouse Teen Center and provide a safe, fun, and inspiring space for teens to thrive,” said Phelon Carter, MPRD’s teen mentor coordinator. “This is more than just a hangout — it’s a place where young people can connect, express themselves, and grow.”

Located at 2960 Alston Drive, the Newhouse Teen Center recently underwent renovations and added a gaming and entertainment area — all designed with teens in mind. More than just a fun destination, the center aims to provide academic, social, and personal support for local teenagers. From help with homework and ACT prep to mentorship programs and guest speakers, it is a resource hub for teens.

“This center is exactly what the community needs,” said Macaiah Beck, MPRD’s assistant teen mentor coordinator. “It’s a place that’s accessible, safe, and fun, where teens can truly be themselves. We can’t wait to see it become a central part of the community.”

In the spirit of giving back, those attending the reopening event on Sept. 3 are encouraged to bring canned goods, which will be distributed to families in need later this year. For more on the Newhouse Teen Center and MPRD’s other facilities and events, visit mobileparksandrec.org.
