Mobile taps Via to provide transit management services

Mobile, Ala. — The City of Mobile is considering a five-year agreement with Via to modernize public transit services for Alabama’s Port City using a combination of fixed-route bus service, paratransit, and on-demand transit options to meet the specific needs of Mobilians.

Under the proposed contract, which the Mobile City Council will consider for the first on Tuesday, Sept. 2, Via would take over the day-to-day operations of the City of Mobile’s WAVE Transit System. As part of a five-year agreement, Via would oversee management, operations, maintenance, customer service, safety programs, logistics, marketing, and the integration of new transit services.

The new partnership reflects the City of Mobile’s commitment to expanding transportation options, increasing ridership, and reducing the City’s financial subsidies for public transit services.

“Mobile needs an affordable, modern public transit system that better serves our citizens,” Mayor Sandy Stimpson said. “Via is a national leader in transit technology, operations, and service design. This partnership will help us meet the needs of those who depend on public transit while also making it an appealing and sensible option for other Mobilians and visitors. We look forward to working with the Council and the Via team to design and create a dynamic service that works for this community.”

If approved by the City Council, Via would take over operations of the WAVE Transit System on October 1 while also continuing to operate “MoGo” — the on-demand, app-based service it launched in Mobile last year through a partnership with the Mobile Chamber of Commerce. The services provided by the WAVE and MoGo would continue their current operations for nine months while Via conducts ridership analysis and community outreach to better understand the needs of Mobilians.

The feedback and data collected will help shape a long-term plan to deliver better, more reliable transit services throughout the City. Any future changes made to optimize routes would follow federal guidelines and include input from riders, members of the community and City leaders. The Via team is also committed to offering WAVE employees an opportunity to continue in their current roles.

As part of its regular rules, the Mobile City Council holds all new items over for one week to allow time for public input. A vote on the contract with Via is not expected until Tuesday, Sept. 9.
