Resurfacing work on St. Anthony Street to begin October 20

Mobile, Ala. — As part of the ongoing Downtown Street Optimization project, the City of Mobile will begin road work on St. Anthony Street starting Monday, October 20.

To help prepare motorists, residents, and businesses, traffic boards will be going up this week along St. Anthony Street between Broad and Water streets. Beginning October 20, crews will start milling the road surface to prepare for paving and restriping work that will begin the week of October 27.

The paving operations will start at Water Street and move west towards Broad Street, with the northbound lane being milled and repaved first. The street will remain one-way during the paving operations. Upon completion, St. Anthony Street will be converted to two-way traffic over night.

On-street parking will not be allowed in active work zones during construction. Once the roadwork is completed, marked, on-street parking will be available along the north side of St. Anthony Street.

These upcoming improvements are part of the City of Mobile’s ongoing effort to implement a Downtown Street Optimization Plan created through a partnership with the Downtown Mobile Alliance. This project aims to make Mobile’s central business district safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

As part of the project, the city will reconfigure, resurface, restripe, and improve several streets in downtown Mobile. The project will also be replacing traffic signals at low-volume intersections downtown with four-way stops to enhance safety and reduce congestion. The goal is to slow traffic, create additional parking, and improve pedestrian safety and business access throughout the area.
