Mobile, AL – More major upgrades are coming soon to parks and community centers across District One. At today’s meeting, the Council approved the latest of these projects which will result in the installation of swing sets and other playground furnishings at Figures Park.

“Good public parks are key to creating healthy children and, in turn, strong communities,” said Councilman Fred Richardson. “Our parks are incredibly important to our neighborhoods and I’m not going to stop until we have addressed needed upgrades at every park in District One.”

Other projects are in the works at several parks and community centers. Most recently, in July, the Council approved funds for a total renovation of the playground area at Trinity Gardens Park and the installation of a pavilion with picnic tables, benches, new trash receptacles, two grills, a drinking fountain and new sidewalks at Mill Street Park. Work at both these parks are expected to begin in the coming weeks.

Councilman Richardson allocated over $300,000 for upgrades at parks and community centers over the last year and has already put in place another $350,000 for projects over the coming year.

Those funds are part of the Capital Improvement Plan, which the City Council created to tackle major infrastructure projects throughout the city. The projects are funded through the extension of the penny sales tax.
