A Message from Mayor Stimpson - August 3

Aug 3rd, 2020

Posted in: MayorCOVID-19

Good evening,

It is 9 p.m. on Monday, August 3 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

As of tonight, Mobile County reported a cumulative total of 9,219 COVID positive individuals, an increase of 92 individuals from yesterday. This is a growth rate of 13.68%. According to the Mobile County Health Department, a total of 198 patients have died due to COVID-19. For a detailed look at today's data click here.

According to the Mobile County Health Department, the increased number of COVID-19 cases reported for Mobile County on Friday, July 31, and Saturday, August 1, was due to unprocessed laboratory reports received by the state surveillance system dating back to early July. This issue did not result in a delay in patients receiving COVID-19 test results. MCHD continues to work closely with ADPH to improve COVID-19 surveillance.

Our hospitals are averaging 13.68% ICU bed availability. This is an increase of 2.55% from the prior week's average of 11.10%. ICU bed availability increased for the second week in a row. For the month of July, our lowest bed average was 6.49% on July 7th and our highest was on July 24th at a rate of 15.79%. These numbers indicate that this virus is still very active.

Remember we can all play a role. Together we can prevent an increase in COVID-19 cases by following these simple steps to stay safe:

· Wear a mask when in public

· Keep your hands clean

· Avoid crowds and keep a safe distance from others

· Stay home if you are sick

As we battle the health pandemic, we are monitoring our economic outlook. According to the Alabama Department of Labor, Mobile has a 13% unemployment rate as of June. This is a 3% decrease from May. Our goal is to continue seeing our unemployment rate decline. We are working with various stakeholders to ensure our economy can weather these uncertain times.

I look forward to a week full of opportunities to continue Mobile's momentum. I remain encouraged by your prayers. Our faith must remain strong and serve as a mighty force over our thoughts and actions. I am grateful to serve as your Mayor and look forward to the accomplishments this week has in store!
