Mobile, Ala. — Mayor Sandy Stimpson and the City of Mobile to host a groundbreaking for the next section of the Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail on Thursday, June 22, at 2 p.m.

The Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail is the realization of a decades-old vision to create a linear park system connected by biking, walking and running paths that follow the path of Three Mile Creek. In 2017, the City of Mobile constructed the first section of the Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail, which currently ends near Fredrick D. Richardson Tricentennial Park.

Supported by federal, state and local dollars, construction will begin this week on a new phase of the trail, which will pick up where the current Tricentennial Park trail terminates at Yerby Dr. and continue westward to the campus of University Hospital. This new 0.6-mile addition to the existing Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail will be under construction for approximately nine months.

This project was designed by Dix.Hite + Partners, and construction is being led by the McElhenney Construction Company. Partnerships with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Alabama Department of Transportation are also supporting the project.

“The vision behind the Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail goes back more than three decades,” Mayor Sandy Stimpson said. “Using one of Mobile’s most beautiful natural assets to connect our community’s parks will create great recreational opportunities for thousands of Mobilians and make our public amenities more accessible. We are very excited to see this project moving forward.”

Once completed, the Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail will be a 6.5-mile trail that connects Mobilians to multiple City of Mobile parks, local infrastructure and downtown Mobile. After being discussed for nearly 35 years, the City of Mobile has organized an implementation plan, secured funding from multiple sources, and is undertaking the design and construction of the greenway in phases.

Upcoming trail phases will connect University Hospital, Mill Street Park and Bush Park at the Boys and Girls Club. The existing trail east of Tricentennial Park will also be connected to a new trailhead at Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., tying into the new bike lanes and sidewalks created as part of the Broad Street Revitalization Project.
