City of Mobile to remove, prune damaged trees along Springhill Ave.
Mobile, Ala. — To address a potential hazard for pedestrians and motorists, the City of Mobile will remove and prune severely damaged live oak trees along Springhill Ave. beginning Sunday, May 5.
After a recent review by the City of Mobile’s Department of Urban Forestry, these maintenance actions were deemed necessary due to damage to the trunks and branches of several trees. A specific cause hasn’t been identified, but it is most likely that passing vehicles have struck the trees over several years.
On Sunday, May 5, three live oak trees along Springhill Ave. between Siena Vista St. and Park Ave. will be removed entirely. Damaged branches on four additional trees in the area will also have to be pruned later. Top Notch Tree Care will be carrying out these tree care operations, which will be closely overseen by ISA Certified Arborist Billy Allen and the City of Mobile’s Urban Forester.
“The canopy over Springhill Avenue is one of the most naturally beautiful parts of our city, and it is unfortunate that trees in that area will have to be removed,” Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said. “However, our first and highest priority will always be public safety. The visible damage on these trees really tells the story. They pose a significant fall risk, and to leave them standing alongside a major thoroughfare would be irresponsible and dangerous.”
Work to remove the three trees along Springhill Ave. is scheduled to begin at approximately 8 a.m. on Sunday, May 5, and should be completed by late afternoon. The City of Mobile’s Urban Forester will be coordinating with the Mobile Police Department to close the westbound lanes of Springhill Ave. between Siena Vista St. and Park Ave. The eastbound lanes of Springhill Ave. will be used for east and westbound traffic while this work is in progress.
