Mobile, Ala. — On Wednesday, July 30, Mayor Sandy Stimpson, District 4 City Councilman Ben Reynolds, and Senior Director of Parks and Recreation Kim Carmody will join local children and families to celebrate the official opening of a beautiful new splash pad at Laun Park.

Designed by Christian Preus Landscape Architects, the splash pad is a nature-themed feature that helps to complement the surrounding area. Shaped like a leaf, the splash pad incorporates nature throughout its design—from the aesthetics to the water features. Like other Mobile Parks and Recreation Department projects, the design process for Laun Park’s splash pad started with community input.

Built by Iker Construction Company, the new splash pad replaced a small, underused wading pool at Laun Park. In addition to the new water feature, this District 4 Capital Project also included landscaping and aesthetic upgrades, as well as improvements to the outdoor restrooms. Overall, the project represents an investment of more than $320,000 into the popular park and community center.

This will be the seventh splash pad at an MPRD facility, joining others at James Seals, Baumhauer-Randle, Tricentennial, McCants-Chavers, Medal of Honor, and Public Safety Memorial parks.

Members of the public are invited to Laun Park to celebrate the opening of the splash pad on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. Members of the media are also invited to cover the ribbon cutting. Mayor Stimpson, Councilman Reynolds, and others will be available for interviews after the brief event.
