Downtown Street Optimization continues with St. Joseph Street conversion
Mobile, Ala. — As part of the Downtown Street Optimization project, the City of Mobile will convert St. Joseph Street from one-way to two-way traffic overnight on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
The following morning, Wednesday, Nov. 19, motorists can expect the new two-way street configuration throughout the entire length of St. Joseph Street, which runs between Water and Dauphin streets. After the conversion, St. Joseph Street will accommodate north- and southbound traffic, and both sides of the street will be able to accommodate marked, on-street parking.
Ahead of the conversion set to take place overnight on Tuesday, crews are working to complete the milling process and will begin repaving St. Joseph Street beginning tonight, Nov. 17. Motorists are advised to pay attention to the temporary “No Parking” signs, as on-street parking will not be allowed during construction. When work is scheduled overnight, street parking will be allowed until 6 p.m.
These ongoing changes are part of the city’s effort to implement a comprehensive Downtown Street Optimization Plan, which was developed in partnership with the Downtown Mobile Alliance. This project aims to make Mobile’s Central Business District safer and more accessible.
In addition to reconfiguring, restriping, and improving several downtown streets, the project will replace traffic signals at low-volume downtown intersections with four-way stops to enhance pedestrian safety and reduce traffic congestion. The overall goal is to slow traffic, create additional parking, improve pedestrian safety, and enhance business access throughout the area.
