Mobile, Ala. — The City of Mobile will soon begin long-planned infrastructure improvements and traffic safety enhancements to the Dauphin Street corridor near the intersection of Interstate 65.

With support from federal transportation dollars and ALDOT, the City of Mobile will be making modifications to Dauphin Street to help improve the flow of traffic, enhance driver safety and modernize one of the city’s busiest commercial and residential corridors.

Beginning in early 2026, the project will help reduce congestion on a highly used section of Dauphin Street between Rimes Road and Sage Avenue. It will also reduce opportunities for significant collisions between vehicles and improve access to Springhill Medical Center for first responders.

  • Coordinated Traffic Signals: A new fiber-connected system from Rimes Road to Sage Avenue will allow traffic signals to communicate with each other and move vehicles more efficiently.
  • Access Management: Median modifications will provide controlled turning movements and improve safety for motorists and riders using the City of Mobile’s public transit system.
  • Modern Infrastructure: Street lighting and traffic signals will be upgraded with stronger fixtures designed to withstand storms and high winds. The roadway will be resurfaced and restriped, and new curbs and gutters will also be added.
  • Safety & Emergency Response: Controlled turning movements and improved emergency access to Springhill Medical Center will increase public safety for motorists and hospital patients.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2026 now that the nearby South McGregor Avenue project is completed and the road has reopened. The Dauphin Street Corridor Improvements Project is expected to take approximately two years. Some nighttime work and temporary lane closures are anticipated; however, traffic will be able to flow through the area during the entirety of the project.

The total cost of the project is approximately $14 million, which includes construction, design and engineering, and right of way acquisition. Project funding is provided by a combination of federal transportation dollars, City of Mobile funds, and Mobile County’s 2018 Pay-As-You-Go program.

The City of Mobile will host a community meeting in the Fellowship Hall of Dauphin Way Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, to share information about the project and answer questions from the community. Hosted by City Councilors Beau Fleming and Cory Penn, Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis and city staff, the meeting will begin at 6 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.
