Jan 12th, 2015

MOBILE, Ala. - Mayor Sandy Stimpson is launching a comprehensive long range plan to guide the future of One Mobile.

"This is the first time a long range plan has encompassed the entire city," said Stimpson. "In the past, underserved communities in Mobile were left out of the planning process and our vision is to create an opportunity for the entire city to put forth their best ideas for the future development of Mobile. "

The comprehensive plan will identify core critical needs, guide budgetary and policy decisions, and provide a framework for future capital improvement and neighborhood-level planning.

Stimpson has tapped the City of Mobile's Planning and Development department to lead the team along with other key stakeholders and private partners including the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Mobile Alliance, the Mobile Historic Development Commission, Housing Board of Mobile, University of South Alabama, Mobile Public Schools, United Way, Airport Authority, Coastal Alabama Partnership and many other organizations.

The Mobile Planning and Development Staff and the Mobile Planning Commission will be the primary contacts for coordinating and managing the plan.

"Rather than discarding past plans and initiatives, we want to take advantage of these previous efforts and integrate additional planning that includes all of One Mobile," said Stimpson. "Our staff will work closely with these other agencies and organizations to ensure their input is incorporated into the plan."

The contract proposal from Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood, Inc. for is $150,000, and will appear on Tuesday's agenda for the Mobile City Council. The Community Foundation of South Alabama is donating $24,000 toward the planning contract and is setting up a fund named Map for Mobile to receive additional donations.
